Your friend is going to start an anime club, and you want us to recommend some?
If he's going to start one, why do we need to recommend anything?
I'm confused...

Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Both pretty popular and well done anime easily obtained in the U.S.
Neon Genesis: Evangelion also.
Note*: Most of these are 'modern classics' (fairly recent animes that most fans seem to know about).
Ghost in the Shell
Akira
Any Lupin movie
Anything Miyazaki
Some personal choices of mine...
Read or Die (should be a single DVD)
Hellsing (extra bloody through)
Excel Saga (best watched with a group...)
~Eternally Dreaming
Goddess Din

-Full Metal Alchemist is an awesome shounen. XD
- X/1999 for your brooding desires, pretty good and so far the best anime I have seen.
- Ayashi no Ceres, this is one of the few smart-shoujo animes, even though is directed to girls over 15 it can be watched by boys too.
- Weiss Kreuss for your share of bishounen, though the plot is not that brilliant nor the animation since this anime is somewhat old, the sequel that is Weiss Kreuss Gluhen is a piece of art, a must-see.
- Saiyuki, though Lel criticizes this one a lot...is still funny, interesting, hilarious, wild, with action, and funny. XD
- Fruits Basket, holy crap! XD I died laughing while watching this one.

There's an anime club at my school. I went to it one time a while back because I knew several girls in it (that's the only reason why I go to most of the clubs I go to :P ), but I learned, to my horror, that hardcore anime fans are really creepy. Like... comic-book fan creepy. That's damn creepy.
I stopped going to that club.

Spirited away is the best movie ever!

Avoid anyone who calls themselves otaku.
The majority of the people fall into the category of...
A.) Ignorant people who think just because they've seen Cartoon Network (and maybe even the legendary ADULT SWIM) that they know everything and classify themselves as 'otaku'.
B.) People who are actually otaku and know what it means.

Inu Yasha
Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
FullMetal Alchemist (SO AWESOME!!!)
Love Hina
Kare Kano (His and her circumstances)
Neon Genesis Evangelion Series + movies
Gundam Wing
(And you can't forget)
Naruto!
I'm sort of in the middle...I know a lot about anime (in comparison to the people I know), but not so much that I can really call myself otaku.
