The only shonen I am reading at time are Shaman King, FullMetal Alchemist and Rurouni Kenshin. While with shoujo I am reading:
Shinsi Doumei Cross, Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden, Love Monster, Love Celeb, many one-shots, Beauty Pop, Ouran Koukan Host Club, Fruits Basket, Kare Kano, Gakkuen Alice, Duklyon, Neon Genesis Evangelion Iron Maiden (I will put this as shoujo because it has TONS of romance), Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, Komako, Slayers (although I am not sure if this one is shoujo or shounen), Kare Made Love, Good Morning Call, Perfect Girl Evolution, BXB brothers, Lovely Complex, Hot Gimmick and Zettai Kareshi.

Lel
Dec. 25, 2005, 06:04 PM
Goddess Din, trust my opinion on this.
I've read all three.
Tenjo Tenge is on a completely different level.* But tits, I mean tits.* Actual nipples.* It has explict rape scenes, explict sex scenes, and explict gore scenes.
For instance, one of the villains assaults a temple.* What he does is throws one of the miko's up in the air, and literally rams a broomstick up her anus.* It comes out her mouth, carrying one of her lungs on the tip.
Now tell me, is this the king of stuff of Love Hina and AI Love You?
No.* Tenjo Tenge has explict material, both sexual and gore.* It is not about romance.
EDIT:* To put it in perspective, Oh Great!, the author of Tenjo Tenge, started out doing hardcore hentai.
Tentacle rape, bestiality, necrophilia, bondage, gang rape, etc.
EDIT 2: In fact, here, judge yourself.
Please tell me if that's anything like Love Hina or AI Love You.

In which, I must say, Tenjo Tenge is much more explict in violence than sexual content. In reality, you never actually see any penetration. Sure, things are implied but gee it's nothing compared to "HAVE A PERSON RIPPED APART AND THEIR INTESTINES FLYING THROUGH THE AIR" or "HAVE A ****ING BO STAFF GOING UP SOMEONE'S ANUS AND EXITING THERE MOUTH WITH A LUNG ON IT".

I think that violence and sexual contents are needed in every anime. but in the right place and without overdoing. for example: trigun is a very nice anime and it is quite violent and "explicit" sometimes, but that isn't a bad thing.

I wonder if this will get more attention than the other thread. If not, I'll just delete this one. xD
Anyway, I wanted to recommend a few mangas to those who are always on the lookout for something new to read. Feel free to do likewise!
Romance/Comedy:
Lovely Complex -- About a tall girl and short guy. Pretty hilarious, actually. It's slightly more funny than the anime, but that's to be expected. Some awesome heart-tugging scenes as well. Click here for manga page example. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v421/ZeldaPower/MovieMemos/ochibichan_scan_lovely_complex_vol0.jpg)
Shinshi Doumei Cross -- This is a supercute story about the complicated lives of some super rich high school kids. By supercute, I mean the art is the kind where there's tons of shinies and sparklies and huge eyes and even the guys can be mistaken for girls. It's almost overly pretty sometimes. But the story is good/unique enough to kind of overlook that. Click here for manga page example. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v421/ZeldaPower/MovieMemos/sdc_36_25.jpg)
Horror:
High School of the Dead -- Haha, first off, I have to say there's a ton of fanservice in this. It's almost like a harem story, except they do happen to have two guys. Anyway, there's suddenly zombies everywhere and this group of high school kids are trying to survive in what's left of the world, while searching for their parents. The art is great, there's lots of gore, and the story isn't bad at all. Not for the immature, though. Click here for manga page example. TK, when I buy manga, I get them from a Japanese specialty store (they have a bookstore inside) but that's sometimes expensive. I also don't have room for lots of books, so I don't actually do that anymore. You can also check out some volumes of really popular mangas at some libraries. When something hasn't been released in America yet, a lot of fans will create subbing groups and translate the scans so people over here can get addicted to the really good mangas. This is supposed to ensure a larger following for the mangaka when it does get licensed for the USA. :)
Because of that, I don't feel bad saying that I usually read scanlations. It's not illegal until it gets officially distributed in other countries, but so many mangas aren't yet that most mangas you can only find with fan translation. Anyway--
Here is where I get a lot of my mangas if I can't find them in America easily. (http://www.stoptazmo.com)
Remember, if you are asked to pay for a fansubbed item, it's a scam!

Story:
Kouyama Mitsuki is a 12 year old girl who dreams to become a singer. She has made a promise to a dear friend that she would become a singer and he an astronaut, and that one day they would find each other again. However, Mitsuki's problem is her health, she suffers from cancer of the throat. In order to save her life, she must undergo an operation where her vocal cords will be removed. If this is down, Mitsuki will never be able to speak, let alone sing.
A day Mitsuki is confronted by two spirits named Takuto and Meroko, together are titled the "Gods of Death". They have come to inform Mitsuki that she has one year left to live. Shocked by this Mitsuki is even more determined to become a singer before it is too late. Complications arise when her grandmother refuses to allow Mitsuki to leave the house, and absolutely forbids her granddaughter to sing in the house. With the help of Takuto and Meroko, Mitsuki must work even harder to reach her goal and see her dear friend one last time before it is too late.
It sounds... sad. But it's really not. I think it is really touching and adorable. <3

Here's a shoujo recommendation. This is taken from www.manganews.net
"Satoko is a domestic girl with a kind heart. Her father died when she was little, and her family has become very poor ever since her father's company went down. However, "life is happy enough when you're optimistic about everything" as Satoko enjoys her daily life heartilly. One day, she was rescued by Fuuma, an extraordinarily matured 10-year-old boy, from a mad dog. Little did Satoko realize that this boy is the head of Wakudera Corporation, as well as her future husband!"
This is one of my favorite shoujo stories ever. And even though the plot sounds creepy, give the story a try. It's romance with huge age gaps, but the author created a sweet, tender story; not a perverted one. I highly recommend this manga for anyone who likes shoujo stories.
The manga is already finished, and it's only four volumes long.

I really want to read Immortal Rain after reading a few reviews, but it's not finished yet (in scanlations and it's not licensed in Mexico.) Does anyone know if the series is finished in Japan?
I am in my third re-read of Hot Blooded Woman: my favorite Korean manwha. It's so funny and great. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a hilarious, romantic-packed story.
If you like Korean romantic comedies, I recommend watching "Full House" <-- yes, it's called that and no it's not the American version. It's an entirely different story actually. :eee:

Well, damn you to hell. I watched the first two episodes and now I am hooked. :looove: It's just so... great. And the heroine rocks.
Do you know of any other korean drama I might like? I feel like I am going to finish this one way too soon.

i know this is going to get eyerolls for many reasons, but guys, read make 5 wishes. i know it's american drawn and is endorsed by avril lavigne, but it's good anyways. you could pretty much replace avril with the hobo from down the street and the story would still a) be basically the same and b) still be good.
also, read pokemon adventures. it's basically my life.
and read life in hell by matt groening, even though that isn't really a graphic novel, but a comic strip. still worth reading, i love his pre simpsons stuff.

Thank God, now they can get back to making more episodes, for everyone to ***** about.
Recommendations? I recommend, Ni Ni Ga Shinobuden. It's hilarious.

My favorite manga is naruto. Especially the shippuden chapters, the clash of all strong characters such as the akatsuki pain, hitachi to naruto and zasuke. Its great reading it, you'll just end up craving for more. Waiting for the updated issues. Naruto forever.

Man, I've been keeping a list of the mangas I've tried because if I don't, I forget to check back on updates later and never finish if they weren't already completed.
My most recent recommendation is the Dogs series, by Miwa Shirow. The art is distinct, expressive, and some of the more disturbing or tragic moments are unforgettable because of the drawing. The story is also pretty addictive, following the different lives of four broken people, that sometimes interact with each other.
I'll come back later to post a few screenshots.

I'm taking a Manga Mania class while I'm here in Japan, and for it, I'm writing an essay about CLAMP... :D So, I've been trying to read through more of their works. Since I got here, I've finished Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, xxxHolic (as much as is out right now, anyway), and Wish. I'm currently reading RG Veda. ^_^ Oh, and I've read Cardcaptor Sakura already as well.
What CLAMP series would you all recommend for me to read after I finish RG Veda? :ooo:

Of all the stuff I know, I still don't know what clamp is, aside from the tool that binds objects together.
I figure it's something I should know since I'm still convinced manga is my destination.

You... you must be joking... :shift:
CLAMP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CLAMP) created such works as Cardcaptor Sakura... surely you've heard of it or at least seen pictures of it:

CLAMP is a group of four women who started out as doujinshi artists before they moved on to the big time... They're incredibly famous for bringing shojo manga to new heights.
Oh, and I forgot to mention in my previous post that I've also read X/1999, so that one doesn't have to be suggested, either. :looove:
EDIT: Whoops, I forgot to include Chobits in there, too... I always forget that's by CLAMP.

Err, is Angel Sanctuary a work of CLAMP? I can't remember. Anyway.
I remember Wish pretty vividly, though it was short.

^_^; Yukito? Yeah... they also took out Toya and Yukito's hinted-at gay relationship as well. Not to mention renaming almost all the characters to give them really stupid names... I mean, Tomoyo to Madison? Yukito to Julian? What the crap? :constipated:

I'm a big comic book lover and I'm finding tons of amazing books every day but I feel like I'm only reading the Western books and totally leaving out Manga (excluding Scott Pilgrim and other Japanese influenced books which are still notably Western)
Can you recommend me some good ones? Not Death Note because I have read some of it and while extremely entertaining am looking for something better.
I've heard a lot about Lone Wolf and club but I haven't gotten around to picking it up
And argh no Naruto

I know the whole vampire genre is pretty played out, especially in manga, but goddamn if Hellsing isn't the most ridiculously bloody and awesome thing I've ever read. (It's also the only manga I've read all the way through, but there you are.)
I mean, it's got vampires, yes, but it's also got Nazi vampires. And I think a werewolf and maybe some other weird shit. And batshit crazy Catholic priests. And really well-mannered English people ****ing shit up. And a lot of references to Her Majesty the Queen and so on.
It's not like literary genius or anything, but it's pretty goddamn entertaining. And who could think implausibly arterial fountains of blood could look so artistic!

There's a whole thread of manga recommendations, prooker. xD Also I eat manga for breakfast and have a 26 page (literally) expanding list of mangas I've read. What qualifications are you looking for besides "not death note" and "good ones"? Because if I need to start popycasting I will.
Edit: I've got a couple minutes to kill before I have to start driving off into the sunset, so here's a couple. My way of keeping track is to have a small blurb next to the manga name so I remember what I read. I get most of what I read from onemanga.com, 1000manga.com, and stoptazmo.com.
Also, I hope you know the definition of shounen, shoujo, and one-shot. And I'm assuming you don't care if they're finished or not. Time to sift through the "A"s! (I won't be pasting the ones I've read that I disliked, or the really girly ones... unless you like romances).
666 Satan -- I highly recommend it because the story is pretty amazing. The art is pretty good if I remember right. Finished. Shounen.
Aishiteruze Baby -- Boy has to take care of young niece, becomes a father figure. Finished. Shou...jo?
Akazukin Eliza -- One shot, retelling of Red Riding Hood. Very pronnish. (firecheetah approved)
Akuma Bengoshi Kukabara – one-shot about a devil that advocates for sinners before they go to hell. Cool. There's a sequel called Defense Devil that is ongoing at the moment. Shounen.
Akuma to Love Song – About a really straightforward, harsh girl that has the impression of being devil-like. I actually like this one a lot, it’s a good, fresh story. Ongoing. Shoujo.
Alive: The Final Evolution -- Strange alien virus affects the human population, creating suicides, power users, and chaos.
Allumage -- a woman aspiring to be a hollywood actress finds herself in a life or death situation trying to save some kids. One-shot.
Anatolia Story (Red River) – a girl is sucked back in time to the Bronze Age and lands among the Hittites, the Babylonians, the Egyptians. She falls in love with a Hittite prince and inadvertently becomes a symbol of the goddess of war, all the while the Hittite queen tries to kill her. Pretty good, though the art threw me off for a while. Shoujo/Shounen
Angelic Layer -- battle dolls. Pretty cute. Short. Finished.
Angel Shop -- Girl makes a robot that looks like her crush. He secretly switches places with it. Cute. Finished.
Anonymous -- nameless assassination organization of kids. Very good.
Ao no Exorcist – About a boy and his twin, and one is the son of Satan, trying to become an exorcist to defeat Satan to revenge his foster father’s death, a priest. Funny, I like the art and style of story telling.
Apple -- oneshot about a guy given powers to save the world and the friend he makes in the process. Awesome. Finished.
Ashita no Ousama -- korean manga. girl becomes a playwright in tokyo, falls in love with a famous actor, etc. etc. Good stuff. Finished.
Asklepios -- about a doctor and his assistant in an era controlled by the church, labelling them heretics. Pretty interesting for what's there.
As the Death God Dictates -- short story about a girl that finds out she'll die in one month. Finished.
I have much more to throw out there. Onemanga and 1000manga also have a randomizer link if you want them to throw a random title at you whenever you click it.
